Safety for Your Family
Settling into a new home can be a busy time, with unpacking and placement of
furniture, changing your address and getting used to the change. There are some
smaller steps that you need to take to make your home secure against theft and
other safety issues that may pop up unexpectedly. You have to consider, besides
the safety of your family, the protection of your personal property. By having
the appropriate security measures in place, you can be assured that your home is
protected and may also be able to save money on your homeowner's insurance. Many
times, an insurer will give you a discount for installing a security system in
your home. There are other preventative measures that you can do; such as
changing your locks and making sure that window locks are in working order.
Things to consider
If your new home was used in the past as a rental property, one of the first
actions to take is to replace the locks on your doors. There can be no real
assurance that all keys were turned in from the final tenants, and new locks
ensure that you are the only one who can access the home. After you are settled
in, do a walk through your home and check over your doors and windows to make
sure that all the locks work correctly. Window locks that are older or broken
should be upgraded to a newer model. Your front and back door should have both a
door handle lock and a deadbolt.
Your home security system is also something that needs attention. The system
should be functional and give adequate protection to the entire dwelling. It is
also advisable to see that the system can contact emergency authorities
directly, such as in the case of a fire, attempted break-in or other emergency
that occurs.
Other Security Steps
The exterior of your home is another place to walk around. The landscaping
that is located directly in front of your home and can also affect the security.
Bushes and trees should be cut back so that windows are not covered up. There
should also be adequate lighting on both the front and back porch as well. Over
your garage, you can install a motion sensor light, which comes on if anyone
walks within its range. You need to get to know your neighbours, as these people
can keep an eye on your dwelling while you are away. Exchange contact
information with them and let them know when you are going to be leaving town
for a long period of time.
